- - Horizon College & Year 7- -

A Horizon College is proposed for the future and initial plans have been drawn up and given Ministry of Education approval.  However, as children have access to suitable secondary schools in the area and until a full investigation into the needs of the community has been considered, a building date is yet to be set.

Horizon School has an agreement of progression for year 6 students with Dubai College, The English College and Dubai English Speaking College (DESC).  Horizon School will be handling applications for year 6 students, wishing to apply, to these colleges.

Horizon College

Horizon Schools have been providing education of the highest standard in Dubai since 1992. Increasing demand for places necessitated the construction of an additional new primary school campus which opened in September 2004. To satisfy the need for further high quality educational provision, the school will open a new purpose-built secondary school in the future. This will be situated behind the new Horizon School and will have its own separate access. The complex will be superbly resourced with bright and spacious classrooms, modern well-equipped science laboratories, design and technology workshops and other specialist areas. Other features will include a large multi-purpose sports hall, outdoor grassed playing fields and use of a 25 metre swimming pool.

ENTRY

Entry will be considered for all students who are deemed by the school to have reached a satisfactory level of proficiency in English. Pupils completing Year Six at the Horizon Schools will be offered automatic entry to Horizon College providing that the pupil's behaviour and attitude are commensurate with the schools' expectations. Parental support will also be taken into consideration as well as the college's ability to provide the appropriate level of learning support. The development and fostering of close and supportive relationships between pupils, parents and teachers is the cornerstone of Horizon education. Therefore entry will be restricted to 100 students in each year group. The initial intake will be for Years 7 and 8 only.

CURRICULUM

During the Key Stage Three period, students are entering a particularly critical phase of personal and intellectual development. This is a time of uncertainty, sensitivity, resistance and questioning. Their educational programme needs to provide students not only with discipline, skills and challenging standards but also with creativity and flexibility. We, at Horizon, encourage students to:

•  realize their own full potential through a school policy of differentiation in planning and teaching
•  develop a positive attitude towards their own learning and that of others, learn from mistakes and value the contributions of others

•  take responsibility for their actions and prepare themselves to become responsible for their own learning as self motivated and disciplined individuals.

At Horizon College we will offer a broad and balanced curriculum firmly rooted in the National Curriculum of England. Students from Years 7 to 9 (Key Stage Three) will study the core subjects - English, Mathematics and Science along with the Foundation subjects - Geography, History, Modern Languages, Design and Technology, Music , Art, Drama, Physical Education and Personal Social and Health Education. Information and Communication Technology will be an integral part of all these. Pupils will be assessed using SAT testing at the end of Key Stage Three.

Students completing Year 9 will, on the basis of consultation with teachers and parents, choose subjects for a two-year course leading to GCSEs. English, Mathematics and Science are compulsory core subjects and in addition a selection is made from Languages, Humanities and Creative Arts.

HORIZON STAFF

All staff at Horizon College will be fully qualified, experienced and recognized by the Ministry of Education. They will be chosen not only for their subject knowledge but also for their enthusiasm and ability to motivate students.

PARENTAL PARTNERSHIPS

At Horizon Schools we recognize the importance of parents and the community as contributors to the students' education and aim to work together with both to ensure that the needs of the students are met. The active involvement of parents has always been one of the strengths of Horizon Schools and this will be continued and developed at the College.

The schools system of internal formative and summative assessment for all pupils provides us with accurate records of progress. Reports and meetings provide feedback Parents are notified of any concerns the school has and we encourage parents to contact the school if they have any issue to discuss. Regular parent-teacher meetings will be held as forums for discussion with subject teachers and form tutors.

HOMEWORK

Homework will be set regularly at Horizon College . This may be to reinforce what has been learned in class or may give the student the opportunity to carry out further research and investigation. It often helps the individual to work on his/her own initiative and develop self-reliance skills.

LEARNING SUPPORT

Regular assessments will identify students who require either learning support or extension work. This will be delivered to individuals and to small groups. Discussion with parents will always take place prior to extra support being given.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Horizon Schools contribute strongly to the philosophy that the education progress is not limited to the classroom. Our aim is to draw out and develop, as fully as possible, the talents of each student and a comprehensive range of sports and other after-school activities will be offered. These will give each student the opportunity to develop as an individual.
